SPORT does pay - for those who are successful that is.

Yesterday, the National Sports Council (NSC) paid out a total of RM319,250 in rewards to athletes in six sports.

Squash was the biggest winner, picking up RM108,750 with Azlan Iskandar receiving RM45,000 for winning his second men's individual title and the team silver at the Asian Championships in Chennai in May.

Azlan, the World No 14, was also the biggest individual earner. Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek presented the awards after hosting a Buka Puasa function at the NSC. Nicol David, the World No 1, picked up RM42,187.50 for bagging her sixth individual title and the team bronze at the Asian Championships.

The national shuttlers picked up RM94,000 for winning medals at the Junior World Championships in Guadalajara in April and the recent World Championships in Paris.

Ow Yao Han and Yew Hong Kheng each received RM22,000 for their gold medal effort in the boys' doubles at the junior world meet while runners-up Teo Eei Yi -Nelson Heg earned RM12,000 each.

The four shuttlers also helped Malaysia win the mixed team bronze medal.

World No 1 Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, who took silver in the recent Paris World Championships, earned RM5,000 each.

Bowling was the third biggest earner with Alex Liew and Muhd Nur Aiman receiving RM20,000 each for winning the men's doubles silver at the Men's World Championships in Munich, last month.

The junior bowlers, led by Sin Li Jane, also earned a total of RM20,000 for their two bronze effort in the World Youth Championships in Helsinki.

Bodybuilder Sazali Samad, who etched his name in the history books for winning his seventh Mr Asia title in Teheran last month, received RM8,750.

The policeman is currently preparing for the Mr Universe Championships, scheduled for Baku, Azerbaijan, on Nov 6-8.

There was also a pleasant surprise for diver Pandelela Rinong on the eve of her departure to China to join the rest of her teammates in centralised training for the New Delhi Commonwealth Games.

Pandelela received a special reward of RM20,000 for bagging two silver medals in the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore recently.

The Youth Olympic Games were not listed under the NSC incentive scheme but Pandelela was nonetheless rewarded for finishing behind China diver Liu Jiao in the 3m springboard and 10m platform disciplines.

The 17-year-old was Malaysia's only medal contributor in the Youth Games.

Pandelela, who will be leaving with coach Huang Qiang for China today, has been tentatively entered for four disciplines in the New Delhi Games.

"The 10m platform discipline will be my main focus in New Delhi as it is my pet event. No local diver has ever won a medal at the Commonwealth Games and it will be great if I can be the first," said Pandelela yesterday.
